Training of Medical Physicists

To become a practicing medical physicist in South Africa, registration as a medical physicist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) is essential. The Council's minimum requirements for registration may be summarised as follows: an Honours degree in Medical Physics and at least two years in-service training under a registered medical physicist in an institution approved by the Council.

It must also be emphasised that enough opportunity for research and further graduate training exists at nearly all the centres where medical physicists are trained. The medical physicist has the opportunity to obtain higher academic qualifications, up to doctorate level, through in-service research.
