Conditions for in-service training

A student with a BSc degree with Physics as a major can, while studying for a BSc Honours degree in Medical Physics at any one of the recognised training institutions, simultaneously register with the South African Medical and Dental Council as a Medical Physicist-in-training. The candidate will thus undergo practical in-service training while studying part-time for the BSc Honours degree in Medical Physics. Current regulations of the professional Board for Medical Science of the SAMDC requires that a candidate must complete two years experiential training subsequent to having obtained the BSc Honours degree in Medical Physics before he/she is eligible for registration as a Medical Physicist. One year may be completed while such a candidate was enrolled part-time for the honours degree in Medical Physics. It will therefore take a minimum period of three years after obtaining a BSc degree to register as a Medical Physicist.
