Diagnostic Radiology

Diagnostic radiology relies heavily on X-rays to image internal structures of the human body. Medical physicists must ensure that diagnostic X-ray equipment (including Computer Tomography scanners) satisfy certain safety requirements, that optimal exposure techniques are used and that quality control is carried out regularly to ensure that the patient receives the minimum of radiation required for a successful examination.

Medical Physicists register with the South African Medical and Dental Council after obtaining an honours degree in Medical Physics and two subsequent years of in-service training at an approved institution.
